Status: alive, but no longer “Windsurf” in spirit — it’s Devin Desktop now. Cognition acquired Windsurf (July 2025, ~$250M; the IP/brand/product) after a messy saga where Google took a $2.4B licensing deal with the co-founders and OpenAI’s $3B acquisition fell through. In June 2026, windsurf.com rebranded to Devin Desktop (“the home for every agent you run”) — one surface to manage fleets of local and cloud agents: plan, delegate, review, ship. The VS Code-fork editor with Cascade is still the core, but the framing has shifted from “agent IDE” to “agent management hub” under Cognition/Devin.
