Roocode

https://roocode.com/ https://x.com/roo_code RooCode

  • works really fast

  • you can queue your next prompts while it’s working on previous tasks

  • open source, installs as a plugin in VS code

  • best for coders to be used as a coding companion

  • can use your browser to test its code

  • Agentic AI dev team embedded in VS Code
Roo Code brings a suite of AI assistants—including Code Mode, Debug Mode, and Architect Mode—directly into your editor to plan, write, and fix code across multiple files in plain English.

  • Project-wide, diff-based refactors
It reads your entire codebase and applies multi-file changes via intelligent diffs, preserving valid code and delivering holistic updates without manual context switching.

  • Fully open-source and model-agnostic
You choose any AI model—OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or local LLMs—so there’s no vendor lock-in, and you can even run everything offline for maximum privacy.

  • Permission-gated automation
Every command—from running tests and opening browsers to executing shell scripts—is optional and under your control, ensuring safe, auditable AI-driven workflows.

  • Enterprise-grade security and deployment options
Roo Code meets rigorous compliance standards, supports self-hosting or on-premise models, and integrates seamlessly with existing tools—all without heavy configuration.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Roo Code is its permission-based command execution: rather than silently making changes, it prompts you to approve each automated action—from installing dependencies to launching integration tests in a real browser—transforming your editor into a collaborative, auditable AI dev team that respects both your workflow and security requirements.

Status: SHUT DOWN — discontinued on May 15, 2026 (team pivoted to “Roomote”). No longer active.

  • Roo Code (the open-source VS Code agent, formerly “Roo Cline”) was sunset on May 15, 2026 — the VS Code extension, Roo Code Cloud, and Roo Code Router all shut down, and the GitHub repo was archived (read-only). roocode.com now redirects to roomote.dev.
  • Why (from the team’s own post): “We don’t believe IDEs are the future of coding.” They bet the company on Roomote, a Slack-first cloud operational agent that handles bugs, escalations, and repo questions outside the IDE. It reached 3M+ extension downloads before closing.
  • Where the community went: the team’s own recommendation is Cline (Roo was a Cline fork — Roo’s work is “merging back to Cline”); Kilo Code (a bigger Roo fork) also published a Roo→Kilo migration guide; community forks like ZooCode exist too.
  • Historical strengths (multi-mode system, BYOK, Apache 2.0, diff-based apply_diff that cut ~30% tokens vs Cline) are now carried forward by those forks. If you had a Roo Code note as a “go-to open-source agent,” swap it for Kilo Code or Cline.
