Summary

Base44 is the Lovable/Bolt/v0 competitor that went furthest in the “you never see the backend” direction — instant, opinionated, fully managed. That’s what made it a one-person startup grow to $100M+ ARR in under a year, and it’s also the catch: you can export the React frontend but not the engine behind it, so apps are locked to Base44/Wix infrastructure.

The big 2026 story is ownership: Wix acquired Base44 in June 2025 (~$80M), and post-deal it’s been consolidating toward the Wix platform — a proprietary LLM (“Base 1”, June 2026), deprecation of custom backend functions, and a narrowing integration surface.
