Autonomous Software Engineer https://devin.ai/ https://x.com/cognition_ai Devin

  • the original “AI software engineer”: you give it a task, it plans, codes, tests and opens a PR — you review, it iterates
  • runs in a sandboxed cloud VM with its own shell, editor and browser (real end-to-end autonomy, not in-editor completion)
  • architecture: planner / coder / critic — the critic reviews its own work for bugs and security before shipping
  • Devin 2.0 (Apr 2025) made it actually usable: interactive planning you approve first, parallel agents, and a $20/mo Core tier (pay-as-you-go ACUs; Team $500/mo)
  • 2026 runs on Claude Sonnet 4.5 with dynamic re-planning; accepts multi-modal input (UI mockups, Figma files, even screen-recording video to reproduce visual bugs)
  • reachable from Slack, Microsoft Teams, a web UI, and a VS Code extension
  • Devin Desktop = the old Windsurf editor — Cognition’s unified product ladder: free IDE → Devin agent, all branded Devin

Devin is the product that defined the “autonomous engineer” pitch in 2024 (the viral Upwork-bounty demos) and then, with Devin 2.0, spent the next year becoming a real product you can delegate to and walk away from. The workflow is deliberately async: describe the task → Devin works in its own environment → review the PR → comment → it responds. It’s the opposite philosophy from Cursor/Claude Code: not pair programming, but delegation to a junior teammate that owns a task end-to-end.

The 2026 numbers are what changed the story: Cognition went from ~$10.2B valuation (Sept 2025, right after absorbing Windsurf) to a $26B+ Series D, ARR climbing from $73M (mid-2025) to **$492M**, enterprise logos like Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs and Microsoft, and a self-referential proof point — CEO Scott Wu disclosed in late May 2026 that 89% of Cognition’s own code is now committed by Devin.

Status: active — the $26B company. Devin is the flagship autonomous-coding agent in 2026, with the Windsurf/Devin Desktop IDE as its front door and enterprise (SOC 2, VPC deployment) as the revenue engine. If “an AI engineer on payroll” is the thesis, Cognition is the company that has most capital behind it. Watch item: the 89%-of-own-code claim is impressive or marketing flourish depending on your trust — treat it as directional.
