Summary

OpenCode is the open-source counterweight to Claude Code: same terminal-agent loop, but MIT-licensed, model-agnostic (including local and your existing subscriptions), and multi-surface. It grew absurdly fast — ~205k GitHub stars and “16M developers per month” claimed by the site in 2026 — and has become the default reference for the open agent ecosystem (the “anomaly” team; dax @dax).

The 2026 positioning: a harness you can trust with any model and any editor, plus a desktop beta with tabs for parallel sessions. If Claude Code is the closed frontier agent, OpenCode is the one that lets you swap the brain, run it locally, and fork the thing.

Status: active — huge and shipping fast. opencode.ai is live; desktop tabs just launched; star count ~200k+. Part of the same “agent harness” wave as VS Code’s AHP and Warp’s CLI — increasingly treated as a first-class agent surface. Nothing negative to report; it’s one of the fastest-growing OSS projects in the category.
